Vintage Race Boat Shop Newsletter & FaceBook

For the past 15 years, we have used the power of Internet Websites and Email to help promote and support ACBS boat shows and APBA vintage race boat regattas. Usually once a month, we send an email with lots of vintage banter promoting vintage events and updates on our shop Website. Over the years our email list has grown to well over 2,000 active members and we have a lot of fun publishing. Send an email if you want to be added or removed from our ever growing email list !!!    BillJohn48@Comcast.net

Then several years ago, we also added newer social media technology and now maintain two Facebook accounts, where we are quite hyperactive, posting daily updates. Lots of fun !!!

CRA Newsletter - Tavares Spring Thunder Regatta !!!

Good morning Gang,

Our winter boating season is in full swing down here in sunny, warm

Florida and we are busy planning for our Tavares Spring Thunder Regatta.

It is important to remember that these vintage events are really social events,

and every event is actually a reunion and gathering of good friends with our

beautiful vintage boats in the background, pulling us together. All are welcome

to come join the fun, with or without a boat. We hope you will consider joining

us, and please be considerate and register early. This lets the volunteer organizers

know you are planning to attend, enabling them to properly plan for the boatcount

for the regatta and the head count for the socials.

Sunday is the registration cutoff - as we finalize Hot Pit layout and vintage heats !!!

CRA Tavares Spring Thunder Regatta - March 17-19th

The past will come alive as vintage and classic race boats of bygone

eras return to Wooton Park in Tavares, Florida for our tenth annual

Tavares Spring Thunder Regatta. Tavares is now a major stop on the

CRA Florida Vintage Race Boat Circuit, and this Spring's regatta features

three days of action with over 75 beautifully restored vintage and classic

race boats running demonstration laps on a 1 mile oval course on beautiful

Lake Dora. In addition to seeing and hearing these unique and beautiful

boats run, spectators are invited to view them close-up in the pit area at

Wooton Park on both Saturday and Sunday - admission is free !!!

We will be running large heats of all the APBA vintage classes, including

outboards, classic glass, small hydros, mid-hydros, large hydros, runabouts,

flatbottoms, skiffs, speedsters and magnificent Gold Cup racers. The Invitation

Registration Packets were mailed to past Tavares participants and we are posting

each registered entry as received and assigned to a vintage heat. If you have

not participated at Tavares but want to join all the fun, please contact Bill John.

the owners directly, for we take no part in the actual sales and we take no

commissions. We just want to help these beautiful vintage and classic race boats

return to the vintage circuit for all to enjoy, not stuck away in some dark storage

facility, never to be seen again. We gotta save these boats and get them back on

the APBA vintage circuit !!!

Here is our first Newsletter from Mount Dora, Florida

 Emailed on 6/27/2014

Good morning Gang,

New location and email address !!!

Yup - it's true. After ten years at our shop in beautiful Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and several years of the snow bird lifestyle spending winters in Mount Dora, Florida and summers in Wolfeboro, we have made the permanent move to the village of Mount Dora !!!

Here is the link for our new location and new email address:

http://www.vintageraceboatshop.com/

Why Mount Dora ???

The long cold New England winters finally got to us, and after participating at the vintage race boat regattas and boat shows in nearby Tavares for several years, we found the Mount Dora area to be a year round beehive of vintage wooden boat activity So we bought a house in the historic village of Mount Dora, with quaint little shops and rolling hills, much like Wolfeboro. This is "old Florida" with a slower pace and located on the Harris Chain of Lakes that connects to the St John's River leading to Jacksonville and the Atlantic Ocean.

Here is the Mount Dora link:

Our new shop !!!

And of course our Mount Dora home has an attached air conditioned two bay garage that is now a man cave and our new Vintage Race Boat Shop. But our objective is to slow the pace down and evolve into more of a hobby shop.

Classic Raceboat Association - new leadership - guess who ???

After 30 years of active membership in the New England ACBS Chapter and 10 years running the Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta with the New Hampshire Boat Museum, we were looking forward to slowing down a titch in the sleepy village of Mount Dora. But during the first week in our new home, a visit by Dick Whyte changed all that. We were invited to a CRA Board Meeting, we were sucked in and walked out as President. So now we are working year round to promote and run vintage events in Florida !!!

The 2014 Vintage Events - thank you to all the many volunteers !!!

We have a passion for all vintage and classic boats including outboards, classic glass, inboard runabouts, skiffs, flat bottoms, hydroplanes, gold cuppers, and especially historic vintage race boats. And to follow our passion, we support and promote the following organizations and participate at their vintage events. But it is important to remember that these vintage events are really social events, and every event is actually a reunion and gathering of good friends, with our beautiful vintage boats in the background, pulling us together. All are welcome to come join the fun, with or without a boat. We hope you will consider joining these very active organizations, and please be considerate and register early for their events. This lets the volunteer organizers know that you are planning to attend, enabling them to properly plan for the boat count for the show/regatta, and the head count for the social activities. Please be aware that it takes an army of volunteers to put on a vintage event, and my personal thanks go to each and every volunteer !!!

ACBS Vintage Events - Antique & Classic Boat Society

Since 1979 we have been active members and promoters of the Antique & Classic Boat Society and the New England Chapter. We were board members and ran the annual Lake Winnipesaukee Boat Show for many years. But we recently moved to Mount Dora and are now active members of the Sunnyland Chapter participating at the many Florida events.

APBA Vintage Events - American Power Boat Association

Our first American Power Boat Association sanctioned vintage race boat regatta was at Clayton, New York in 1992, when we got a chance to run our beloved vintage race boats on an actual race course, running some pretty hot laps. Since then, in the spirit of Gar Wood and Orlin Johnson, we have run our Gar Wood Speedster Obsession at APBA vintage regattas. Like vintage car racing, there are actually people out there who run their beautifully restored vintage race boats at speed on a race course and participate on a very active APBA vintage race boat regatta schedule.

CRA Florida Vintage Race Boat Circuit - Classic Raceboat Association

The Classic Raceboat Association (CRA) is a Tavares, Florida based non-profit organization

formed to organize, promote and run both fun-runs and vintage regattas. These are vintage

and classic race boats from the early 1900ís to the 1980ís. It is interesting to note that many

CRA members do not actually own vintage race boats but join for the social activities, especially all the fun at our regattas and our Monthly Fun Run & Gatherings.

Saturday Morning Gatherings !!!

For the past ten years, we held our Saturday Morning Gatherings at our shop in Wolfeboro,

New Hampshire. But since we have moved to the beautiful and historic village Mount Dora.

our Saturday Morning Gatherings begin with a full breakfast at Betty's Greenhouse Grill at

3725 Old Highway 441 in Mount Dora, followed by another gathering at one of the many

local boat shops/toy chests. We also gather on Wednesday mornings at Bill Feikert's shop to

ride our motorcycles and of course every week day we also gather at Bill Feikert's shop for

our lively 4 pm Peanuts & Beer sessions. We are also active with local ACBS and CRA events where we are busy building the Florida Vintage Race Boat Circuit. Yup, we are quite active down here in sunny, warm Florida where we can ride our motorcycles and play with our vintage wooden boats all winter long - we just love it !!!
